Jane Sheehan
- Hypnotherapist
We put the following question to Jane: What made you decide to train as a Hypnotherapist?
Her reply was as follows:
Originally I trained as a staff nurse at St. Bartholomews Hospital in London in 1982, and I have recently spent 10 years in the area of mental health working with people with eating disorders. After having hypnotherapy myself and finding it really useful, I was inspired to train as a hypnotherapist myself with the Anglia School of Hypnotherapy. Since moving to Norwich in 1989 I have been involved in the practice of various natural therapies, and I believe that they can help you to manage and improve your own health and well being.
Our next question was: What exactly is Hypnotherapy?
Jane replied:
Hypnosis is a state where your mind is focused and your body is deeply relaxed. It is in between being awake and asleep, and feels similar to when you are daydreaming. Under hypnosis, the barriers between your conscious and subconscious mind are relaxed, allowing access to your deep inner resources. Hypnotherapy uses this state to help you to achieve your goals and overcome longstanding problems - it simply makes use of a state of mind that you probably slip into yourself during the day, to access your subconscious mind to make therapeutic changes that you have chosen for your own benefit. The changes will be the ones you want to make and will be discussed in depth with your hypnotherapist.
It’s important to know that you cannot be made to do anything that you do not want to do and you remain in control the whole time. Hypnosis is a very pleasant state of deep relaxation as well as being a powerful tool to use to bring about therapeutic change. You and your therapist work together to decide upon, and help you achieve your goals. It is not, however, a magic wand, and it can only help you to change if that is what you really want to do.
Some examples of what Hypnotherapy can be used for:
Weight loss · Insomnia · Anxiety · Phobias · Irritable bowel syndrome · Nail biting, etc. · Stress · Pregnancy and Childbirth · Regression · Achieving your goals
It is very important when choosing a hypnotherapist that you are treated by someone who is registered with an organisation such as the General Hypnotherapy Standards Council, so that you can be safe in the knowledge that they are fully trained and abide by a professional code of conduct. When you visit me, the first thing that happens is a free half-an-hour-long consultation. In the consultation I take details of what you would like to achieve using hypnotherapy; we will discuss your aims and expectations and look at the best way of achieving them.
We need to make sure that hypnotherapy is the most appropriate form of treatment for you, as otherwise it would be a waste of your time and money. Change usually happens fairly quickly, so often only between one and four sessions are necessary.
And, finally, a quote from Jane:
Hypnotherapy can help people to use the powerful resources of their own minds to bring about change in their lives and their bodies. |
